OUR LINEN

Flax Linen is one of the oldest natural fibres in the world and one of the first fibres used to weave into fabric. It dates back more than a few thousand years.
Fred + Lola source our linen from France due to the climate and cooler temperatures, this is one of the best locations to grow flax. Fields of flax after having been harvested are left to rest for five weeks before being gathered up to be turned into all the magnificent linens (from the stalk), oils (from the seeds – linseed oil), and the seeds themselves (high in Omega-3 essential fatty acids). No part of the flax goes to waste.
It takes only 100 days for the flax to mature in the prime growing period in May ready to be harvested in June. During this period no irrigation is required making flax fully organic. Compare that to cotton which requires approximately 8,000 litres of water per harvest for a similar production amount of flax.
All in all flax is organically grown, fully renewable resource and completely biodegradable.
The Benefits of Sleeping with Linen
- hypo allergenic
- high air permeability and heat conductivity properties – in other words, due to its highly breathable properties, the fabric keeps you cool in the warm months and warm in the cool months
- Lasts far longer than cotton if cared for properly
- Approximately 30% stronger than cotton and holds its shape better than cotton due to the strong fibres.
- Becomes softer with each wash, and many state, it is only after 2-3 years that the fabric becomes the gem that people describe as the true luxury.
- Anti-static and can help soften and protect the skin as it has natural pH properties
- Extremely absorbent being it absorbs as much as 20% of its weight in moisture before feeling wet and also repels dirt
At Fred + Lola we choose linen due to it being more durable and sustainable than other fabrics. Linen has so many positives as a fabric but we especially love how it makes you feel like you are sleeping in luxury.
